The documentation of Seirijai Jewish cemetery, which was initiated last year by NGO Litvak Cemetery Catalogue „Maceva“, is practically completed.

The cemetery was cleaned, the remaining tombstones counted and photographed in 2018 August 6-19 during the fourth international summer camp which „Maceva“ organizes every year since 2015. In total 692 gravestones were discovered. Based on these findings a cemetery map was created. The camp was partially funded by the Jewish Community of Lithuania.

This year all the collected information is analyzed and published on the website of „Maceva“. Fully or partially legible inscriptions were found on the majority of matzevot. All of them written in Hebrew language. The year of the oldest burial is 1789.

Epitaphs were transcribed and translated by Lara Lempert, the head of the Judaica Center at the National Library of Lithuania. The content is highly professional.

Until the end of this year „Maceva“ is planning to transcribe and translate into English language legible inscriptions of Telsiai, Subacius and Valkininkai Jewish cemeteries. Virtual Jewish cemetery database will be updated with more than 1000 new records with names of the identified dead and year of death.

NGO Good Will Foundation (https://gvf.lt/en/) is funding the identification process of graves.
