The Jewish community in Maišiagala was established in the second half of the 19th century. Although Jews are not yet mentioned among the town’s 752 residents in a 1859 census, later data—though the figures in the sources are inconsistent—indicate a growing community: in 1897, 109 of the 920 residents were Jewish.

It is known that in the mid-19th century, there was a wooden synagogue in Maišiagala, attesting to the religious and communal life of Jews in the town. During the interwar period, it is reported that about 55 Jewish families lived in Maišiagala. In 1930, about half of Maišiagala’s approximately 800 residents were Jewish.

Most of Maišiagala’s Jews were engaged in trades related to clothing production and trade—from tailoring to retail. In addition, some were artisans, while others engaged in small-scale trade and peddling in the Vilnius area.

During the interwar period, the main economic activities of the Jewish community remained largely unchanged, but during the economic crisis of the 1930s, local Jews were aided by relatives who had emigrated to South Africa.

The cemetery was documented in 2023 October together with US Embassy and their volunteers.

Maišiagaloje žydų bendruomenė susiformavo XIX a. antroje pusėje. Nors viename 1859 m. gyventojų surašyme tarp 752 miestelio gyventojų žydai dar neminimi, vėlesni duomenys, nors skaičiai šaltiniuose nėra nuoseklūs, rodo augančią bendruomenę: 1897 m. iš 920 gyventojų 109 buvo žydai.

Žinoma, kad XIX a. viduryje Maišiagaloje stovėjo medinė sinagoga, liudijanti religinį ir bendruomeninį žydų gyvenimą miestelyje. Tarpukariu, nurodoma, kad Maišiagaloje gyveno apie 55 žydų šeimos. 1930 m. iš maždaug 800 Maišiagalos gyventojų apie pusė buvo žydai.

Dauguma Maišiagalos žydų vertėsi su drabužių gamyba ir prekyba susijusiais amatais — nuo siuvimo iki prekybos. Be to, dalis jų buvo amatininkai, kiti užsiėmė smulkia prekyba ir išnešiojamąja prekyba Vilniaus apylinkėse.

Tarpukariu pagrindinė žydų ūkinė veikla iš esmės nepakito, tačiau 1930-ųjų ekonominės krizės metu vietos žydams padėjo į Pietų Afriką emigravę giminaičiai.
